About Brett Frey
Brett Frey is an accomplished Electric and Double Bassist who currently lives in Nashville TN as a freelance bassist and educator. Brett’s first performance upon moving to Nashville was a three night engagement performing with Trisha Yearwood and the Nashville Symphony at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in October of 2019 as a featured member of her trio. In that same month he received a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Southern California where he studied Electric/Double Bass Performance, Jazz, Popular Music, Music Theory and Analysis and Pedagogy.
Upon graduating from USC, Brett was inducted by the Thornton School of Music as a member of the ETA Chapter of the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society for excellence in performance and academic scholarship. In 2020 he opened his own commercial music school called the “Westhaven Conservatory” in Franklin TN, where he teaches private music lessons and presents public masterclasses and music courses to the community. Brett received a Master of Music degree in Performance from Northwestern University, and graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelors degree in Electric Bass Performance. He was also a recipient of the "Outstanding Performer Award" during his time at Berklee.
Brett has studied under the finest teachers and performers in the music industry. Past teachers include: Bob Mintzer, Darek Oles, Patrice Rushen, Edwin Livingston, Alphonso Johnson, Sean Holt, Paul Jackson Jr., Chris Sampson, Larry Livingston, Victor Goines, Carlos Henriquez, Reuben Rogers, Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Victor Bailey, Danny Morris, John Patitucci, Lincoln Goines, Chuck Rainey, Susan Hagen, Eddie Gomez and John Clayton.
For the last 10 years Brett has performed on the electric and double bass all over the country within many different ensemble settings with styles that range from Pop, Rock, Blues, Metal, Funk, Soul and Jazz. Some of his notable one off shows include performing at the Agganis Arena in Boston MA for a tribute concert to Harvey Mason. Also being honored that evening was Dee Dee Bridgewater, Julio Iglesias and Doug Morris. Other performances included two popular music showcases at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, and a performance at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park in Chicago, IL with the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra. Within Brett’s educational settings he has performed with artists such as Victor Goines, Chick Corea, John Patitucci, Antonio Sanchez, Steve Wilson, Marion Felder, Earl Slick, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, Frank Ferrar, Joe Lynn Turner, Bernie Worrell, Liberty DeVitto, Malcolm Jamal Warner, and Roy “Futureman” Wooten. Brett also performed with a hard rock group at the Bamboozle Festival at Giant Stadium in May of 2010.
Since 2014 Brett has been on the road with a couple different bands including two tours that covered 21 states on a national tour with Amy Black that featured the music of Muscle Shoals and included venues such as The Bluebird Café and the City Winery in Nashville which featured Spooner Oldham on keyboards. Prior to that, Brett also performed on three regional tours of the east coast that included legendary clubs in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
